Go Nuts !! For guilt free Snacking

Snack: a small amount of food eaten in between meals.

Why Go Nuts !! as a snack ? The satiation provided by the high fat and protein content in nuts can result in reduced snacking on sweets and other carbohydrates. It’s thought that their appetite-suppressing effects are likely due to the increased production of the hormones peptide YY (PYY) and/or cholecystokinin (CCK), both of which help regulate appetite.

In other words, eating nuts as a guilt free snack, increases feelings of fullness. This results in eating less of other foods in between our main meals i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Nuts are high in fat and calories, but they are good heart healthy fats, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats which lower bad cholesterol levels. In addition the calories in nuts are not empty calories as with sugary drinks, junk foods or processed snacks, but they also provide proteins, vitamins, dietary fibres and minerals. Also all the calories in nuts, especially whole nuts, may not be absorbed because they resist breakdown by body enzymes. This makes nuts ideal for snacking without having to worry about weight gain.

Clinical trials found that adding lots of nuts to one’s diet had a limited effect on body weight. But more important, participants in studies that included nuts in a weight-loss regimen lost more weight and ended up with a smaller waist and less body fat than participants who did not eat nuts.

Nuts are nature’s way of showing us that good things come in small packages. These bite-size nutritional powerhouses are packed with heart-healthy fats, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Other beneficial substances in nuts include antioxidants and other phytochemicals. All of which suggest to make the best guilt free snacks an essential part your daily food intake.
