Study: Plant-Based Diets Boost Metabolism

If you have been thinking of losing your lockdown weight, eating a plant-based diet could be the key to your perfect summer body. Let’s see what research says!

When you look at a plant-based diet, it necessarily means consuming foods derived from plant sources. Such a diet mainly consists of whole grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts, and other plant-based products.

Apart from weight loss, a plant-based diet is also known to improve heart health. Studies have found that it reduces cholesterol levels, which ultimately controls the risk of type-2 diabetes and certain types of cancers.

Coming back to weight loss, a recent study shows plant-based diets can enhance body metabolism. Metabolism refers to the rate at which the body converts food and drinks into energy. When metabolism is better, it sets the environment for weight loss in your body.

What Does the Study Say?

Published in the JAMA Network Open journal, a study highlighted how a plant-based diet could help burn an after-meal calorie to induce weight loss and improve cardiometabolic risk factors in overweight people.

Participants in the study consumed a plant-based diet of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, and fruits for 16 weeks, resulting in an increase in after-meal calorie burn by 18.7 percent compared to participants who didn’t follow a plant-based diet.

Foods to Include in a Plant-Based Diet

If you wish to follow a plant-based diet, you must include protein-rich foods like beans, chickpeas, quinoa, nuts, chia seeds, tofu, and pulses. Additionally, other foods that are mandatory in a wholesome plant-based diet include –

  • Foods with plenty of iron – flaxseeds, spinach and beetroot.
  • Low-glycemic foods such as green vegetables, fruits, raw carrots, kidney beans, chickpeas and lentils.
  • Seeds and nuts
  • Teas like oolong tea and green tea
  • Ginger
  • Water

It’s about bringing a change in your daily food habits. Diets that are followed for a stipulated period to give short term results are not as effective as making a lifestyle change by consuming the foods mentioned above on a regular basis. Cut down your processed food intake and feel the change in your overall health by following a plant-based diet.
